Author Interview: Dawn Huskey

Dawn Huskey is a fellow #RomanceAuthor whom I had the pleasure of meeting earlier this summer at Barnes & Noble's #RomanceCon.

Her debut, The Saving Love Collection, features seven contemporary short stories exploring the overarching theme of how love can save a person.

Will they survive the attacks of the jealous and possessive? Will their relationships be intact when it is all said and done? They all discover how love works as they go through challenges. They feel immediate attraction when they finally find the love they have been searching for.

Follow the lives of Michael and Marie in My Dream to My Nightmare, as they are hunted by possession and diverted identity. Katie and Travis as they fight jealousy in Love. Sarah and Scott as they fight a stalker from the past in Loved Twice. Seth and Jamie as they battle the dark past in The Love That Saved Me. Dawn and Jason as they discover their friendship goes deeper in A Best Friend's Love. Tori and Ryan as the love they share is started by surprise in A Surprise Love. Sean and Ashlee as they rekindle a forgotten attraction in Love in The Rain.

The book is available across all major retailers. You can order your copy here.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

It was a couple of years ago and my imagination was running away with me. I had to write it down. Since then I could not stop writing.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

My biggest inspiration is my husband Jason. Then I fell in love with Nicholas Sparks’ love stories. There are also some life experiences that I used in some of the stories that I do write.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I don’t have a set schedule. I write when I am inspired no matter where I am. Then I write after a long day of work. When I write I have to have music and nothing else in the room.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

The first book that I wrote has not been published yet but it was about five years ago that I wrote it. I was 38 years old and the book was inspired by the way my husband and I got together with some fiction intertwined in it.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I like to walk in the woods or on the beach. I am in a bowling league on Monday nights. I love to read. It helps inspire me to write. I love hanging out with friends and family. I love being outside and enjoying nature.

What does your family think of your writing?

They love my writing. They cheer me on. I feel their love and support when I am out meeting fans.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I learned that I can do it. I was in learning support classes all throughout my school life. I never would have thought I would be a writer let alone an author. It is a good experience.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

During my first book signing a father was shopping at the bookstore with his daughter. He turned to her after reading my about the author section and told his daughter that, “You see if Mrs. Huskey can do this writing even after her struggle through school. You can do anything you want.” Her eyes lit up and I could see her dreams coming back to her. It was a warming experience. If my experience and my words can inspire people to pursue their dreams and they can do anything they set their minds to.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Writing for me is energizing. I started back writing again during the pandemic. One night I wrote from 10 o’clock at night to 4 in the morning. I was so energized the next day that I only slept for an hour and was up writing again. That night was when The Saving Love Collection became a reality.

What is the first book that made you cry?

A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

What do you have coming next?

I am working on a script for my book. I am hoping that a studio picks it up and helps me make it into movies. My second collection of stories is done and waiting for a publisher. My second collection is dedicated to my dad and family. I am currently on my third collection of stories along with a script. My third collection of stories are dedicated to my friends. I am excited and can’t wait to become a full time writer.

The author resides in Pennsylvania with her husband of almost 20 years. When not writing, Huskey works as a transportation assistant and a school bus driver. Her hobbies including reading and spending time with family and friends.
